1. Full-service move

For most people, this is the ideal way to relocate. With this option, you are relinquishing as much jobs as possible to professional movers. A full-service move can include the following services: packing, loading (to the truck), transport, unloading, even up to unpacking the items.

Fans of this type of move, love the fact that you can keep your old home intact for a longer period of time. This is in comparison to having to pack and do everything yourself which of course you’ll have to start earlier.

The key ingredient of a full-service move is convenience. But of course, this comes at a price. Depending on how much stuff you own and how far your new address will be, hiring pros can cost anywhere between a hundred dollars to a thousand or even more.

2. Self-move

To do a self-move means to do things DIY-style. This means that you are taking responsibility for all parts of the move and are probably going to drive your belongings personally to your destination. Some people use their own vehicles for this, but that’s only for local moves and those who own large automobiles or trucks. Most self-moves require renting a truck.

Some think that this method is cheaper but in reality, you still have to spend a lot of money. This will include gas, toll, truck rental, and numerous other costs that are involved when making a road trip (hotel, stopovers, etc.) In addition to this, there’s also one important factor to consider- the effort you have to put. Doing everything yourself is HARD.

3. Hybrid moves

This third type involves a combination of your own labor and professional services. This is another common practice for people who want to save money, and those with some extra time on their hands. Variations include:

• Hiring movers but having to do the packing and unpacking yourself. (Not so full service) Packing actually accounts for around a quarter of the cost of a full service move.
• Renting a truck which you will drive yourself, but hiring professionals to help you pack and load everything into the truck.
• Paying only for assistance with loading and unloading – because this is one of the biggest challenges of moving your belongings. It’s the most physically demanding.
